“I have always enjoyed viewing artwork, whether in a museum or a gallery, a show or simply through the aisles or a dusty antique store.
When a particular piece moves me, I consider the artist as a person, their connection with the subject matter, their mastery of technique and execution.
How much time did it take to create and build that particular piece? Was the piece created in a studio, a backroom, an art class, outdoors or simply in their kitchen because it may have had the best light? What was their medium of choice?
There is so much more that an artist can invest into a painting besides their time.
There’s vulnerability and humility. Motivation. Hope. Joy. Escape. Passion and Frustration. It’s ultimately, a documented moment in a person’s life. A moment of concentration, contemplation and intimacy between the artist and subject matter.
Lately, I have found much delight in mixed media. It provides plentiful textures that assist in translating moments, expressions and impressions onto a canvas or board, whether combining oils, other paints, papers or photographs that I shoot.
In the end, if I
can capture a viewer’s interest long enough in today’s fast paced environment of ours and have them simply pause and ponder over one of my works then that piece is successful.”
